In 1948, Fred Rietze and his brother, Harold started up the first tenpin bowling center in Winkler called Rietze Brothers Bowling .

Between 1951 and 1958 Fred promoted and developed the sport in his region by organizing leagues and hosting tournaments for the growing number of interested bowlers.

Besides introducing tenpin bowling to a new region of the province, Fred was involved in the administration of the sport by serving as the Director of the Winkler Tenpin Bowling League (1952 – 1953), President of the Winkler Tenpin Bowling League (1953 – 1955) and as an Executive Board Member of the Winnipeg Bowling Association (1953 – 1956).

Through Fred’s efforts, the sport of tenpin bowling flourished and grew to become one of the more popular activities in the Central Region. Although the original bowling center was destroyed by fire in 1963, Fred’s early pioneering work has lead to the large number of individuals from Winkler and the surrounding municipalities currently participating in our sport. The new Valley Bowl was constructed in 1974.
