Beginning in the early sixties, Mary Johnstone was involved in the promotion and development of Junior and Adult Tenpin Bowling Programs.
In 1963 she developed and initiated a Junior Bowling Program at Chateau Lanes. Mary soon established a strong following of youth bowlers in the program, which still continues today.
Mary’s coaching philosophy focused on a positive approach, developing the Junior bowlers ability while reinforcing their confidence and self-worth through achievement. Her patience and diligence allowed many junior athletes the opportunity to excel and emerge out of the program as a competitive bowler and a better person.
Mary was also instrumental in the establishment of the Youth Bowling Council National Championships. In recognition of her many contributions to Junior bowling in Manitoba, the Manitoba Junior Bowling Association annually sponsors and hosts the Mary Johnstone Memorial Tournament.
In 1975, Mary became involved with the Manitoba Provincial Women’s Bowling Association and was one of its founding members. In honor of her work towards the betterment of competitive bowling, a two day scratch tournament called the Mary Johnstone Ladies Classic is held annually in January.
