MERITORIOUS SERVICE
Inducted 2001
George became interested in bowling in 1965, while working shift-work for the Canadian National Railways. When he was informed that there were no morning or afternoon leagues George investigated on how to establish his own league.
RED, WHITE & BLUE LEAGUE – SECRETARY
On advice from Gord Rathwell (a top Canadian bowler), George started up a doubles league at All-Star Lanes in 1965 called the “Red, White & Blue Railroaders” (named after the three types CNR fares). It was also decided to name all the teams after CNR towns in Manitoba.
All-Star Lanes folded after the 1965-66 season, so the league moved to Empress Lanes. The Red, White & Blue Railroaders League remained there for 13 years, during which it expanded from eight 3 man teams to twelve 4 man teams.
The league started at Chateau Lanes in September, 1978 where it still remains, reaching its peak in the 1998-99 season with thirty 4 man teams. The league was featured in the ABC Bowling Magazine (Dec.-Jan., 2001 issue). 2001-02 will mark the league’s 37th season, for all of which George has continued as their league secretary.
